Borger’s roots run deep – all the way to “black gold.” Borger began as a boom town in 1926 and was the largest of three towns in Hutchinson County. Borger grew rapidly and remains a vibrant oil-petrochemical community. Borger is 45 miles northeast of Amarillo and serves as the hub for the Panhandle of Texas.

Borger supports a vibrant quality of life for residents and a profitable community for businesses. Civic and charitable organizations, churches, and special interest groups provide activities and support for families. City parks, bowling center, movie theatre, youth center, sports facilities, golf courses, skate park, gyms, swimming pool and splash pad are just some of the recreations venues that keep adults and youth occupied. Lake Meredith provides fishing, hunting, birding, trail riding, boating, scuba diving, hiking, swimming, camping, and picnicking. In 2007 Borger was voted as the best Panhandle Plains Region Ride by “Ride Texas” Magazine.

Many entertainment venues are available in Borger. Craft shows, the Downtown Merchants Beach Bash in June, Tri-City Concerts throughout the year, cook-off's, and many sporting activities including golf tournaments . The Chamber of Commerce sponsors a lighted Christmas Parade on the first Monday in December. Historical culture and arts as well as history of the area can be viewed at the Hutchinson County Museum in Borger. Other historical attractions in the area include Adobe Walls and Alibates National Monument with a contact station for viewing of exhibits and videos.

Businesses are located throughout the City and provide the basis for retail, service, and industrial needs. New business is encouraged and receives special assistance from the Borger Chamber of Commerce and Borger Economic Development Corporation.

Medical care is provided by the local hospital, medical doctors, specialists, dentists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and optometrists. Two local facilities provide care for seniors and rehabilitation services. Numerous home health care agencies provide services along with hospice.

Dedicated to improving the academic performance of all students is Borger ISD, with Paul Belton Early Childhood, Crockett and Gateway Elementary, Borger Intermediate, Borger Middle, and Borger High School. There is one private school in the community. Abundant extracurricular activities are enjoyed by students. Frank Phillips College provides a comprehensive two year community based educational program committed to providing high quality learning experiences and services. Many adults participate in continuing educational classes to enhance their skills and knowledge. Hutchinson County provides a public library.

City of Borger residents have access to utilities of electricity, gas, water, trash collection and sewer services and the City of Borger works diligently to continue to provide and enhance services for residents. Local fire and police departments provide trained and professional services as does the Hutchinson County Sheriff’s office which provides law enforcement outside of the city limits.
